Suffer Through? (Single)

by Lauren Hoffman

about

This song is about being at a crossroads in a committed relationship.
The narrator feels held back - something is drawing them away from the promise they made. That promise was supposed to safeguard them against this chaos of choices. It should have been the forever answer, but now there are so many questions…

How do you know when the best choice is to stick it out and see it through?
How do you know when to ‘follow your heart’, even if it means breaking a promise?

The music reflects this conflict - shifting between time signatures like a restless, undecided mind. Finding freedom by rebelling against the expected norm.. finding comfort by returning to it.

The story ends in melancholy contemplation. There isn’t a good answer. Because when choosing ‘your own happiness’ means hurting someone you promised to love, there is still going to be sadness in that choice.

lyrics

SUFFER THROUGH?

On the other side of this
There's me like I used to be
The me I left behind
It's a noble little thing
The life we created
The sea where we both drown

A breath, a breeze
To wake up my skin
I've been sleeping
In the body that I gave you
Breath, breeze
Where have you been?
Can't you see we become strangers

Everything changes
We don't want the same things
What should we do
Just suffer through?
I promised to love you
Now i don't want to
Look for a reason
Try to believe again

Now I'm running at full speed
But I can't see the ending
What might break my stride
Now I know what I need
And I'm gonna stop pretending
No, everything's not fine

A light in the night
To wake up my eyes
I'm reaching for it
But you're standing in the way
A light in the night
Brighter than bright
Can I touch it?
Or will I go up in flames?

Everything changes
We don't want the same things
What should we do
Just suffer through?
I promised to love you
Now i don't want to
Look for a reason
Try to believe again
